The music for this song was written close to a year before the lyrics. "It just sat in the microcassette recorder until one day I got an email from someone," says Ryan, "and I found something dark enough to match the mood of the song. It’s about looking back and learning from your past, and being able to see how messed up your life would be if you had continued down the same path… even though you thought it was such a great idea at the time."
lyrics
well all those times you warned me so
i never thought you’d do it though
while every waking hour you cut the ties that bind
i never tried to pretend you were mine
from a younger time
another chance comes by and it ends the same
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
but nothing ever stays the same
you’re out of time i’m out of my mind
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
i stand here in the pouring rain
and wait for the sun to come out again
well all those times you opened your mouth
and you tried to care but nothing came out
you didn’t have to lie i expected nothing
and from half a world away you’re still making promises
did you think i wouldn’t see you haven’t changed?
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
but nothing ever stays the same
you’re out of time i’m out of my mind
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
i stand here in the pouring rain
and wait for the sun to come out again
well all those times you smiled that lie
and i bought it lived it and sold it
who ever thought it would end that way?
i couldn’t let it happen again with the screaming and tearing
and babies and wondering
why i gave you my name
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
but nothing ever stays the same
you’re out of time i’m out of my mind
bittersweet romantic nostalgic
i stand here in the pouring rain
and wait for the sun to come out again
